KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. – ASTP crewmen Thomas Stafford, Vance Brand, and Donald Slayton wave to crewmen of the USS New Orleans after emerging from their Apollo Command Module during recovery operations in the Pacific Ocean today. The crew splashed down at 5:18 p.m. and were hoisted aboard the New Orleans about 6 p.m., after which they participated in ceremonies on the ship’s deck. The splashdown ended the historic ASTP space mission, which was highlighted by the docking in Earth orbit with a Soviet Soyuz spacecraft.
