KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. – ASTP astronauts Thomas Stafford, Donald Slayton, and Vance Brand speak by telephone to President Gerald Ford from aboard the USS New Orleans, the prime recovery ship for the ASTP mission. The astronauts splashed down in the Pacific Ocean, west of Hawaii at 5:18 p.m. After being hoisted aboard the New Orleans, the crew participated in brief ceremonies on the deck of the ship. The splashdown ended the crew’s historic nine-day space flight, highlighted by their rendezvous and docking with a Soviet Soyuz spacecraft in Earth orbit.
