Graduate Record 2020: The Barking 20's
Southwestern Oklahoma State University
The Roaring ‘20s was meant to be the inspiration for The Barking ‘20s theme this year, but the COVID-19 pandemic put a damper on that joyful spirit. On-campus classes ended in mid-March 2020, just as the Specialized Communications class, which produces the Graduate Record, was completing its final touches. However, the staff managed to complete most of the assignments prior to closure. We apologize to any groups that were omitted as a result of this disruption.

Graduate Record 2007: Bulldog Prints Edition
Southwestern Oklahoma State University
During the 2006-2007 school year, students participated in everything from palooza, to studying at the library, to having fun at Cowboys. With the fall semester beginning, students looked forward to attending athletic activities, homecoming, and the Miss Southwestern Pageant. Spring semester started out a little slick, causing the campus to close for the first time in several years. Despite a chilly start, the semester warmed up in March when actor Pauly Shore visited campus for Panorama. With spring break approaching, students were anxious for a break from studying. When classes resumed, everyone was looking forward to summer. With finals standing in the way, students went to the library to begin studying.
With the semester ending in May, graduation opened a new beginning for the class of 2007.

As we look back on the success of past generations at SWOSU, we can only have the same hope for our future. The faces have changed and so have the fashions, but the tradition of excellence has remained the same throughout SWOSU's history. So as we graduate, and begin to look forward, we really can say... the future is history.

Graduate Record 2003: Making It
Southwestern Oklahoma State University
A Chinese proverb says that "the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step."
For some that step is the beginning of the journey to attaining a college education. The decision to attend college is not an easy one; it is a decision riddled with thoughts of strict budgeting, massive time consumption, and of course dedication. Each person has his or her own reason for taking this step, but most would agree that the advantages of getting a degree tremendously outweigh any burden that the journey might place upon them. The journey begins as first-time students enter Freshmen Orientation. Most have no idea what to expect or what major to declare. The choices are overwhelming, but as their time at SWOSU continues they eventually find their niche and settle in. Before long graduation looms near and marks the beginning of yet more education for some, but for others it marks their release into the real world as they continue making the journey.
The seniors at Southwestern chose a university of 5,100 students in Weatherford, Oklahoma. They chose a major in one of the five schools. They studied, they worked, they socialized, they played, but, most important of all, they made it.

Graduate Record 2002: Voices of the 21st Century
Southwestern Oklahoma State University
Dr. John Hays was formally inaugurated as the 16th president of the university on December 5, 2001. In July 2001, Hays replaced Dr. Joe Anna Hibler, who retired after 10 years as president. State legislators, the Oklahoma Regents for Higher Education, Faculty, Staff and representatives from the Weatherford community were present at the occasion. Others included were students and family. Fifteen student ambassadors were chosen along with ushers from the Student Government Association. The Weatherford String Quartet provided the reception music. In accepting the symbolic mace of office, Hays stressed the importance of producing graduates who think critically and analyze issues.
"We must take the initiative to address problems that do exist," he said. "We must keep an open mind to new ideas." The new president emphasized the importance of knowledge and its role in protecting the nation's liberty. He also stated that university must be active in spreading knowledge now and in the future. All the stake holders, students, faculty; support personnel, community and alumni, must work together for success, he said.

Graduate Record 2001: Centennial Edition
Southwestern Oklahoma State University
It was called Southwestern Normal School. Its yearbook was The Oracle. The year was 1901. Oklahoma wasn't even a state when Weatherford started up the small teacher's school. There was no campus. Instead, the town borrowed office space from a beer company. Finally, a building was set up on a hill north of town. In a grand ceremony one morning, the students, faculty and staff marched from downtown Weatherford to their new home.
On a chilly, rainy March 8, 2001, Southwestern re-created the scene, ending with a campus-wide picture. The event was a 100 years in the making, just as the senior class of 2001 is a reflection of 100 years of progress. For a century, buildings have been torn down and put up. Enrollment has steadily increased, from about 20 students to over 5,000. Wars have been fought, on campus and in the world. The names of the students, faculty and even the university have changed. Through this evolution, Southwestern has emerged as a respected, quality institution, and its students reflect that. Who wants to be a part of history? The seniors of 2001 do, and so does everybody that comes to this institution for the next 100 years…

Graduate Record 2000: The Future is Now.
Southwestern Oklahoma State University
We waited for the world to end… It didn't happen. We watched the skies for catastrophic or miraculous events. The sky was empty. As the clock struck midnight on December 31, 1999, we were ready for whatever the world was going to throw our way. And the world balked. After months, even years, of weathering predictions of disaster and chaos descending with the advent of Year 2000, we got nothing. The worried analysts who said computers around the world would crash just looked like fools. The doomsday predictors didn't even have good excuses as to why nothing happened.
So we sit on the other side of Y2K, knowing that we spent all our time and worries getting to Jan. 1, 2000, but having little idea what to do now that we have made it past the dawn of the new millennium. In essence, we survived Y2K and made it into the future. Therefore, the future is now.

Graduate Record 1999: Priceless
Southwestern Oklahoma State University
The Mastercard "priceless" advertising campaign hits on a specific point — there are some items you can put a price on, and there are some you cannot. The point rings true at Southwestern Oklahoma State University. You can put a price on books, room and board, dinner, clothes. You can count the number of hours you spent studying, talking, partying, or sleeping. But if you combined all your time and money spent in Weatherford, Oklahoma, you could never put a price on it. Your four years in Southwestern are wrapped up in a combination of experiences, fun, sorrow, stress, happiness and laughter. Your time here is the "college experience."' And no price can be put on that.

Graduate Record 1997: Any Questions?
Southwestern Oklahoma State University
May 10, 1997, the day graduates placed the tassels on their caps and felt a sense of pride and accomplishment for succeeding in their quest for knowledge. Hundreds of graduates, faculty, family and friends gathered in Milam Stadium to witness students become 1997 graduates of Southwestern Oklahoma State University. All those in attendance listened to Attorney General Drew Edmondson speak to everyone in recognition of the students' successful accomplishments.
