NINE ASTRONAUTS - The second group of astronauts was selected by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration on Sept. 17, 1962. The group is pictured here with models of the type of spacecraft used in Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo missions. In the back row (left to right) are Astronauts Elliot M. See, Jr., James A. McDivitt, James A. Lovell, Jr., Edward H. White, II, and Thomas Stafford. In the front row (left to right) are Astronauts Charles Conrad, Jr., Frank Borman, Neil A. Armstrong, and John W. Young.
(SINCE THIS PHOTOGRAPH WAS MADE: Elliot M. See, Jr., civilian, died in a T-38 jet crash on Feb. 28, 1966, at St. Louis, Mo.; Lt. Col. Edward H. White, II, USAF, died at Cape Kennedy in the Apollo/Saturn 204 accident on Jan. 27, 1967; Col. Frank Borman, USAF, withdrew from the astronaut program in May of 1969 to serve NASA in another capacity, but now he is affiliated with the United We Stand organization; Lt. Col. James A. McDivitt, USAF, withdrew from the astronaut program on June 25, 1969, and now he serves as Manager, Apollo Spacecraft Program; Neil A. Armstrong, civilian, became Deputy Associate Administrator for Aeronautics, Office of Advanced Research and Technology at NASA Headquarters, Washington, D.C., on July 1, 1970.)
