CAPE KENNEDY, FLA. – Astronauts Walter M. Schirra, Jr. (foreground), command pilot, and Thomas P. Stafford, pilot, arrive at Pad 19 during the Gemini 6 pre-launch countdown. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration has planned Gemini 6, a two-day mission in space. An attempt was made to launch Gemini 6 from Pad 15 at 9:54 a.m. (EST) today. However, seconds after ignition, the first stage engine of the Gemini launch vehicle 6 shutdown due to a faculty release of a liftoff umbilical plug.
