CAPE KENNEDY, FLA. – A Helicopter hovers over the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Gemini 6 spacecraft just after it splashed down 12 miles from the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Wasp in the western Atlantic recovery area at 10:29 a.m., (EST) today, December 16, 1965. A three-man U.S. Navy frogman team and survival gear were dropped into the water to aid in the recovery operations. Astronauts Walter M. Schirra, Jr., and Thomas P. Stafford remained inside the spacecraft until it was hoisted aboard the carrier. Gemini 6 was a highly successful 25 hr. 52 min. mission in space.
