Venice Unveiled: Science Behind the City
Proposal Description
My topic explains how science and engineering created the functional city of Venice, the “Sinking City”. I chose this because I was interested in learning about it myself. I’ve always wondered why people took the time to drive millions of stakes into the ground to build a city that appears to float on the water. Was it a whimsical idea, or did they need a city in that specific area for some reason? Why are there not more cities or towns that resemble the architecture/engineering of Venice? I present a summary of the engineering, how Venice is able to “sit” on top of water, and what functional purposes it serves. The readers of my poster will learn about how the engineering of Venice affects its citizens today, and whether it serves as an important landmark (such as for trade).
